The character of Jesus is compelling and mostly consistent in all four gospels, as well as the non-canonical gospel of Thomas. This inclines me to believe in his historical reality. That doesn’t mean that the biblical stories are factually true; it might just mean that he was mythologized after his death. This is likely because the gospels were written several decades after the events they describe when there were no eyewitness left to confirm or refute the details. Whether he performed actual miracles or was raised from the dead is another matter, one of belief in a supernatural reality versus a commitment to materialism. I personally see him as a great spiritual teacher, even though I am not Christian. I am open to the idea of miracles and divine intervention, but I don’t think there is enough evidence to prove they happened in this specific historical context. In fact, there is no way to prove anything of this nature. Humanity is still not evolved enough to explore esoteric concepts of reality and to devote resources to that exploration. We’re too busy finding ways to extract profit from the earth while we slowly destroy it.
