Thank you for this. I have always believed it to be true and it’s nice to have it confirmed by an obviously sensitive and self aware man.
As for your detractors in the comments, they complain about the patriarchy making things unfair for women, that we have to do too much emotional work for men who have too much power. I believe that idea is just as harmful as the traditional idea that men must be strong and silent.
I think it would be nice if women actively tried to imagine what it’s like to be a man who can’t show vulnerability and show him some compassion. That doesn’t mean appeasing abusers- some men should just be avoided; but a man who is struggling emotionally and wants some understanding is not a danger to women. Let’s try to give him what he has trouble giving to himself. If you think that’s “unfair” to women, fine. Don’t be with men. I say let’s meet them halfway as long as they’re not violent.
