Many attempts have been made to reform English spelling. George Bernard Shaw tried it in the early twentieth century.
All failed.
There are many reasons. One, English has many varieties with different pronunciations. Which one would you choose? Would Standard British English be spelled differently from Standard American English? What about nonstandard varieties like Cockney English? Ebonics?
Also, pronunciation changes over time. Should spelling reflect that? My teenagers pronounce certain words differently from me and so do their peers.
Watch a film clip from the early 1960s of people talking (unscripted) and you will hear many differences in pronunciation, diction, intonation and even grammar.
I think that the problems are so many that linguists simply give up and keep what we have.
