I Want to Be a Domestic Goddess

But I don’t want to suffer the consequences.

Domestic goddesses are everywhere.

When I got up this morning, I intended to read the New York Times for a few minutes followed by an hour or so of reading Medium and then spend the rest of the day being disciplined (exercising, writing, playing my violin, making healthy meals). Instead of my daily wake-up reading, however, I got lost in reading the Salon.com food editor, Mary Elizabeth William’s, columns.

I found myself experiencing extreme lifestyle envy as I read about her Thanksgiving traditions, which included making scones the day after the holiday instead of going Black Friday shopping. I read recipe after decadent recipe. I seriously considered making her roasted pear and chocolate scones. The only thing that stopped me was not having any pears or chocolate in the house. I settled for her pumpkin bread, which was not only very easy, it also called for ingredients I had on hand.

What’s the problem, you might ask?

Because baking in the morning is going down a rabbit hole I have already gone down numerous times in the past couple of years since I retired from my teaching job.

I have a habit of getting lost in domesticity. When I do that, I sacrifice other things…
