I spent my entire teaching career trying to get these ideas across, with varying levels of success. It’s a part of the English curriculum in Ontario, where I taught. But most teachers shy away from teaching media studies, which is where these ideas are covered. It’s hard being the only person for whom this part of the curriculum is important. People simply don’t want to acknowledge how much their thinking is controlled.
