I never studied American literature in university, so I did not know his work when I became an English teacher. And I didn’t have to teach him because I taught in Canada. Finally, in almost the last year of my career, a student in senior English decided to write his independent essay on The Sun Also Rises. I dutifully read it and was overwhelmed by the beauty of the understated emotions he hinted at in that novel. I was entranced (and my favorite author is Shakespeare). I want to read more.
