I believe leaders should be intellectually and emotionally engaged as well as confident in their ethics. By this definition, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Eliot Trudeau was a great leader. In 1970 he shut down terrorists in Canada by invoking a draconian law that allowed authorities to find and arrest a group that had kidnapped and murdered two high-level figures. When asked if he was really going to do this, he replied “Just watch me.” He didn’t care what anyone thought. Many progressive thinkers denounced him for this, but the terrorist group (FLQ) he targeted with this action disappeared from history.
