I also prefer traditional, metred poetry to free verse. But there are some modernist masterpieces, and I would include T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland among them. Ditto for some modernist paintings and buildings. I think the real problem is not Modernism, but the other problem you identify, namely the current obsession with identity. People’s solipsism today as it is expressed in both poetry and prose is truly breathtaking.
