Dear Shannon Ashley

We all want what we can’t have.

Dear Shannon,

You are my favourite writer on Medium. When I read my morning newsletter, I always look for your name first. I have loved every single article by you since I started reading Medium last year.

I guess this is a kind of fan letter. But from someone who also sees you like a mother would. At 36, you are only three years older than my daughter. So forgive me if I take a somewhat motherly as well as fangirl interest in you.

I read your article “Who Gets to Be a Woman?” and it got me thinking about what people long for in life. At 58, I have had more than a few years of both getting what I long for and not getting what I long for.

The thing is, we all believe that the one thing we can’t have is the one thing that is standing between us and happiness. It’s different for everyone. Some people focus on a job, or a specific amount of money, a material object like a house, or the ability to travel or just have freedom from something like a toxic relationship.
